Leading isn’t treating everyone the same. It’s giving each person what they need to do their part.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Identical treatment sounds fair and frequently is not, because people arrive with different experience, confidence and circumstances. One person needs the instructions twice and another needs to be left alone; giving both the same thing shortchanges one of them. Fairness is everybody getting what the job requires from them, not everybody getting the same slice of your attention. The equal version is simply easier to defend.

Ask two people what would actually help them, and expect different answers. Adjust for each rather than inventing one policy. Say out loud why somebody is getting something different, so it does not look like favouritism.
