You won’t feel smart while learning. You’ll feel smart later, about stuff that used to confuse you.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Learning rarely feels like getting cleverer while it is happening. From the inside it feels like confusion, slowness and a quiet suspicion that everybody else has understood something you have not. The sense of being capable arrives much later, and always about older material, once the hard part has gone quiet and turned obvious. Judging yourself by how you feel in the middle of learning is measuring the wrong thing.

Think back to something that baffled you two years ago and now seems easy. That gap is your evidence. When this week’s work feels murky, treat the murk as a stage rather than a verdict.
