One book gives you a complete-looking picture because you cannot yet see what it left out. The second disagrees with the first, the third shows you the field is an argument, and only then can you tell how provisional your confidence was. Shallow certainty is not a character flaw, it is a predictable stage of reading one source.
When a topic starts to matter to you, find somebody who disagrees with your first book and read them properly. Note the two or three points where the accounts split. Those disputes are where the real content lives.
