Translation apps give you words. Living conversations give you the language.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

A translation hands you the dictionary meaning and strips off everything around it. What you miss is the speed, the filler words, the gestures, the way a phrase changes depending on who is saying it to whom. Those arrive only from a real exchange with somebody who is not waiting for you to type. Language is a thing between people before it is a list of equivalents.

Find one conversation a week where you are not allowed the app. A relative, a classmate, an online language exchange, a shopkeeper who speaks it. Keep the app for afterwards, to look up the word you needed and did not have.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Have you spoken a new language with an actual person?
