Giving up means stopping. Asking means you are still going and have decided not to waste the next three hours. The request itself is also a piece of work, because to ask well you have to say what you have tried and where you got stuck, and doing that often shows you something before anybody answers.
When you are stuck tonight, give it a real attempt first, then ask with specifics: here is what I tried, here is where it broke. Send it to a teacher, a classmate, a colleague on your shift. Notice that the people who get help fastest are usually the ones who ask best.
