You’ll forget most bosses. You’ll never forget the first one who was patient with you. Be that one someday.

Early jobs are where you learn what work can feel like. Most of the people in charge blur into a general memory of shifts and rotas, but the one who explained something twice without making you feel small stays sharp for decades, because at that age you had no idea whether you were any good.
Notice who does that for you now, and tell them if you get the chance. Keep the memory for later, because one day you will be training somebody who is sixteen and terrified of the till. Being the patient one costs about four extra minutes.
Who treated you patiently when they could have been harsh?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
