Before you decide someone’s wrong, try arguing their side for one minute. Out loud.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Holding a position gets easier when you have never had to build the other one. Thinking about the opposing view is not the same as constructing it; saying it out loud forces actual sentences and exposes where their case is stronger than you assumed. Sometimes you come back more certain, having found the real weak point.

Pick the next disagreement that matters, at home or in class, and make their case out loud for sixty seconds before you make yours. Do it properly, not as a joke. It changes how the rest of the conversation goes.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose argument could you make convincingly if you tried?
