What looks like luck from far away often looks like years of work from up close.

From far away a result arrives all at once, so it looks like something that happened to a person. Up close there are years of unglamorous repetition that nobody was filming. Calling it luck is comfortable, because luck is not a thing you could have been doing instead.

Take one person whose position you envy and find out what the five years before it looked like. Old posts, an interview, or just asking them, and count how much of it was ordinary weeks nobody praised.
