Clarity makes disagreement more productive because people can finally identify what they disagree about.

Much disagreement is really confusion about terms. Two people argue for an hour and discover they meant different things by the same word, or that they were answering different questions, and the heat was manufactured entirely by imprecision. Clarity does not end disagreement; it locates it, which is what makes progress possible. You cannot resolve what you cannot find.
When a disagreement stalls, stop arguing and try to state precisely what each of you is claiming. Write both down. Often one of you changes position immediately, and if not, at least the real difference is visible.
In your last argument, were you both arguing about the same thing?
