You can want more than your parents had without thinking less of what they had.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Ambition gets tangled up with judgement when it does not have to be. Wanting a different life than the one you grew up in says something about what you are drawn to, not about whether your parents did well. They may have been building with less, under conditions you have never had to work in. Going further is often the thing they were building toward.

Say the ambition out loud at home without framing it as an escape. If you can, name one thing their work made possible for you. Both are true in the same breath, and saying both keeps the conversation open.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you want that your parents never got?
