Wanting more for your life isn’t arrogance. Looking down on people who want different things is.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Ambition and contempt get bundled together, usually by people who have met someone insufferable. They are separable. Wanting a bigger life is a statement about your own appetite and costs nobody anything. Deciding that the cousin who is content with a steady job and a garden has somehow failed is the arrogant part, and it is also just wrong, because they were answering a different question.

Keep the ambition and check the sneer. When you catch yourself ranking somebody’s life against yours, ask what they were actually after. Then go back to your own plan, which is the only one you have any say in.
