If you have to become someone else to keep a person, they’re keeping somebody else.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Any closeness held together by a performance is attached to the performance. The other person is responding to the edited version, so the approval never quite reaches you, and the edit has to keep running to hold things in place. That gets exhausting long before it gets obvious.
Pick one thing you have been hiding around someone and let it show: an opinion, a taste, a plan of your own. Watch how they handle it, which is the real information. Being liked a little less for the accurate version is better value than being liked a lot for a part you are playing.
Who are you editing yourself down to keep around?
