You are careful with the things that have obvious security settings and casual with the part that can actually be damaged. Flattery works because it skips the check entirely, arriving as warmth rather than a request, so by the time somebody asks you for something you have already filed them as an ally. Attention is not the same as care.

When somebody new is unusually complimentary, slow down and watch what they do over a few weeks rather than what they say. Notice whether they are kind when nobody is impressed. Let trust arrive at the speed of evidence.
