“Buckle” means to strap in or to collapse. Pressure asks which one you’ll do.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

The same situation can produce either response, and the word for both happens to be identical, which is an accident with something true inside it. Pressure does not decide for you, even though it feels like it does at the time. What usually tips it is preparation, sleep and whether you settled in advance what you will do when things get loud. Collapse is rarely about weakness.

Before the next thing you are dreading, choose one concrete action for the hardest point: the breath, the first question, the opening line. Write it down. Then strap in and do that small prepared thing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which did you do the last time pressure arrived?
