You can do favours for a person you have not become yet. Past you left the coin by accident, which is why it feels free, and the same mechanism works on purpose: the kit laid out, the battery charged, the message drafted before you got tired, the dishes done the night before. The pleasure is in receiving something you did not have to do at the time.

Set one of those up today for tomorrow morning, small enough that you will actually do it. Pack the bag, fill the bottle, write the first sentence. Notice how much easier the morning version of you has it.
