Telling somebody to feel differently adds a second problem to the first. Now they are upset and also being corrected for being upset, which nearly always raises the temperature, because the instruction carries a message that their reaction is unacceptable. Nobody has ever been talked out of a feeling. They get talked into hiding it.
When somebody is upset this week, lower your own volume and ask what happened instead of managing them. Let the first ninety seconds exist without a solution in them. The calm you bring works much better than the calm you demand.
What did you say to someone upset that made things worse?
