The Lego set looks great when you follow the instructions. The best builds usually start after you lose them.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Instructions get you a correct result and only the result somebody else already imagined. They are worth following while you are learning what the pieces do, and then at some point the manual becomes the ceiling rather than the floor. Everything interesting you will ever make starts in the stretch where you no longer have a diagram and have to decide what a piece is for. That stage feels like being lost and is not.

Take something you already know how to do correctly. Do one version this week with no template, no tutorial, nobody’s example open in another tab.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did you make up after the directions ran out?
