Long bridges are built to sway a little. Something that can’t bend at all eventually cracks.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Flexibility is a structural requirement, not a weakness in the design. Long bridges are built to move a little in wind and traffic precisely so the force has somewhere to go, and the thing that holds itself perfectly rigid is the thing that eventually fails. People made entirely of rules behave the same way. They look strong for a long time and then break all at once over something small.

Find where you have been completely unbending lately. Give something one inch this week, an opinion, a plan, a standard you hold other people to, and see whether the structure survives.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where are you refusing to bend even slightly?
