Objects can preserve memory without preserving the person.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

An object can hold a season without holding the person in it. Their handwriting, the shape their hand wore into a handle, the smell of a coat. It brings back something real and it also stops well short of them, and living with that gap is part of what grief asks.

Keep what genuinely comforts you and let go of what only hurts, and know that which is which can change with time. There is no correct number of things to keep. Give yourself permission to decide again later rather than getting it right now.
