Standing in line is one of the few times you’re allowed to just stand there. Look around instead of looking down.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Dead time is one of the few unclaimed parts of a day, and it gets filled automatically before you notice it was there. Waiting with nothing required of you is rare, and your phone will take it if you let it, which is fine except that unfilled time is where noticing happens. Nothing is asking for your attention in a queue, so it is yours to spend.

Leave your phone in your pocket in one queue this week. At the shop, the bus stop, the cafeteria. Look at the room, or at nothing much, and see what four unmeasured minutes do.
