You are the only person watching yourself continuously. Everyone else gets occasional glimpses and is mostly busy worrying about their own, so the thing you have been replaying has usually been gone from their memory for years. The embarrassment is real and the audience you are imagining is not.

Test that this week with something small. Wear the thing, ask the question, be the one who gets the answer wrong, then count how many people mention it afterwards. The number will be lower than you expect, and it is a useful number to know.
