Whatever the letter says, it’s an answer about one application, not a ruling on your whole life.

A decision letter answers one question, which is whether one place had room for one application this year. It is not a measurement of you, even though it arrives looking like one, in an envelope with your name on it. The people reading had limited spots and limited information. Reading a whole future into that page gives it authority it never had.

If a result is coming or just came, feel it for an evening and then write down what is still true: what you are good at, what you still want, what else you applied for. Keep that list where you can find it next time.
