Agreeing to keep the peace isn’t peace if you’re still arguing in your head all night.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Going along with something to end a conversation can look like peace from the outside while the argument carries on in your head at midnight. That version costs more than the disagreement would have, because it is unresolved and you are carrying all of it. Quiet on the surface and churning underneath is not calm, it is postponement. Real agreement feels different, in that you stop thinking about it.

If you said yes to something you did not mean, you are allowed to go back. One sentence does it: I have thought about it, and I am not going to be able to. Earlier is easier, and later still works.
