Being allowed to be silent without it meaning anything is a specific kind of safety, and it is rarer than it sounds. In some houses a quiet person gets asked immediately what is wrong, or is assumed to be sulking, so you learn to perform a baseline cheerfulness just to be left alone. That is tiring in a way that is hard to describe to anyone who has not done it.
