Draw something from real life for ten minutes and you’ll realize you never actually looked at it before.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Drawing forces a kind of attention that looking does not. The moment you have to put a shape on paper you discover you do not know how a hand joins a wrist or where the shadow really falls, because you have been using a rough symbol instead of the thing itself. That gap is normal and a little startling. Most of what you think you have seen is a shortcut.

Spend ten minutes this week drawing something in front of you, badly, and show nobody. A shoe or a mug will do. The noticing is the point.
