Moving to a new place makes you notice everything for a week. Try being new to your own life sometimes.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Newness switches your attention on, and then familiarity switches it off again, usually inside two weeks. That is efficient, because you cannot study every lamppost forever, but the cost is that you end up living somewhere you have stopped seeing. The place did not get duller; your looking did.
You can fake the first week on purpose. Walk home a different way, sit in a different seat, or go round your own kitchen as though you had just moved in and were deciding what is ugly. Ten minutes of that returns a surprising amount of detail, and it works on people you live with too.
What would a newcomer notice about your daily life immediately?
