Your hands felt shaky the whole presentation. Your classmates saw someone holding notes.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

What you feel and what shows are two different scales. A pounding heart and shaking hands are enormous from inside and nearly invisible from ten feet away, where the picture is just a person standing up holding some paper. Nobody in the room has access to the broadcast you are listening to.

Test it rather than taking anyone’s word. After the next thing you have to stand up for, ask one classmate whether you seemed nervous, and ask in a way that lets them be honest. The answer is almost always that they did not notice, and that answer is worth keeping for the next time.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What nerves did you feel that nobody in the room saw?
