Every writer, designer and comedian started with the same skill: noticing what everyone else walked past.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The first skill is not making things, it is noticing them. Every joke, song and good sentence began as somebody registering a small true detail that everybody else walked past, and the making came afterwards as a craft. That order matters, because noticing is trainable and free and does not require you to be talented yet.

So start where they started. Write down three things you actually noticed today: an odd sign, the way somebody says your name, what a room smells like. Do it for two weeks and you will have a page of material and, more usefully, an eye that is switched on by default.
