If you only read headlines, you only know the angle somebody chose for you.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A headline has a job, and that job is not accuracy. It is getting you to stop scrolling, which means somebody chose which fact goes first, which word carries the heat and what gets left out. Read only those and your sense of the world is assembled entirely from other people’s framing decisions. You end up with strong opinions you did not build.

Take one story you have a reaction to this week and read it to the bottom. Notice what the top line left out and whether you still feel the same. If you are about to repeat something you only skimmed, say that is all you have seen.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you know that story beyond its headline?
