People remember how something ended more than how it went. End your shifts, talks and visits well.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Memory does not average an experience. It keeps the peaks and the last few minutes, so a good afternoon that finishes badly gets filed as a bad afternoon, and a hard shift that ends with a decent goodbye is remembered as fine. The ending does far more work than it feels like at the time, and it is also the cheapest part to get right.
Choose your endings on purpose this week. Leave a shift by saying goodnight to whoever is still there. Finish a visit with your grandparents before everyone is tired. End a hard conversation with one kind sentence, even if nothing got solved.
What kind of ending did your last shift or visit get?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
