The first month living alone shows you which habits were yours and which were just your family’s.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Living on your own separates your own habits from the ones you absorbed. Meal times, bedtime, how clean a kitchen needs to be, whether music goes on the moment you walk in, all of it came from somewhere, and until nobody else is involved there is no way to tell which parts were ever yours. That first month is less about freedom than about taking the inventory.

Whenever you get there, keep a short list of what you changed in the first few weeks and what you kept. Both halves tell you something. Then change one more thing on purpose rather than by accident.
