You learn who you are less from big moments and more from what you do when the line at the store is long.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Character is not stored up for emergencies, it gets spent in small amounts all day. A long queue, a slow website, somebody new on the till: these are the real tests, because nothing is at stake and nobody is impressed. How you behave there is who you are the rest of the time, scaled down. Big moments mostly reveal what the small ones already built.
Take one ordinary irritation this week and handle it deliberately well. Let somebody in, stay off your phone while you wait, be decent to whoever is working. Notice the urge to be short with a stranger and leave it unacted on.
How do you behave when a line is not moving?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
