In fog, ships slow down and sound their horns. When you’re unsure, slow down and tell people where you are.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two things happen in fog, and both are useful. Speed comes down so there is time to react to whatever appears, and the horn goes out so nothing collides with you by surprise. Uncertainty calls for the same pair: fewer committed moves, and more information about you in the open, because most of the damage in confusion comes from people guessing at each other.

When you do not know what to do, say so to somebody. Tell the teacher you are behind, tell your manager the order will be late, tell your friend you need a day. Then take smaller steps than usual until the picture clears.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When you are unsure, do people around you hear about it?
