Lots of mistakes happen in the minute after something goes wrong. Breathe before your next move.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

The original problem is often small, and the damage gets done by the reaction to it. In that first minute you are rattled, you want it fixed immediately, and the move you make is aimed at the feeling rather than the situation. Most of what people regret is not the accident but the sixty seconds after it.

Build a pause into the moment things go wrong. Count to ten, put your hands down, do not send the message, do not say the sentence. Then decide. The problem will still be there, and it will be noticeably smaller than the one you would have created.
