Get good at being bored. A lot of strategy is waiting for the right moment without wandering off.

Waiting well is a skill, and what defeats most people is not the waiting but the discomfort inside it. Boredom pushes you to do something, anything, and that is how good positions get spent early. Being able to sit in a dull stretch and stay pointed at the same thing is rarer than it sounds.
Practise with something small: twenty minutes with no phone, a queue you do not fill, a quiet evening you do not rescue. You are training the ability to be uncomfortable without acting on it, which is exactly what you will need on the day it matters.
What do you reach for the second you get bored?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
