Private and secret aren’t the same. Private protects you. Secret usually protects a problem.

Not telling people things is normal, and much of your life is nobody’s business. What matters is what the silence is doing. Privacy keeps something safe that an audience would damage. A secret usually hides something that would require somebody to act if they knew, and that second kind gets heavier the longer it is carried.

Think of something you are not talking about and ask which of the two it is. If nothing bad happens when the right person knows, it is private, and you can keep it with a clear head. If somebody would need to step in, you could tell one person you trust.
