You can like someone a lot and still decide they don’t get a vote on your plans.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Affection and authority get tangled together, especially with people who love you. Someone can be important to you, be right about plenty of things, and still not be the person whose approval a decision needs, because they are not the one who has to live inside it. Keeping those separate is not coldness toward them.

Name who actually gets a vote on the next big thing you decide, and keep that list short. You can still ask the others what they think and genuinely want to hear it. Asking for an opinion is not the same as handing over the decision.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose opinion do you treat as a vote it never earned?
