Inherited things are not tidy. Alongside the skills and the sayings you get the evidence of somebody being human: the duplicate wrenches, the wrong tool kept for no reason, the handwriting nobody can read. Those details are the part that makes the person real rather than a story, and they are usually the bits that get laughed about most warmly.

Ask about the odd items when you find them, while there is still somebody who knows. Write the answer down in a note. The strange details are what you will want to repeat later.
