Your grandparents’ hands have done more work than any résumé can list. Hold them sometimes.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
A pair of hands keeps a record that no document does. Decades of work leave their own marks, and none of it fits on a page or comes up in the summary people give of their own lives. Taking somebody’s hand is a small acknowledgement of everything it did long before you arrived.
Sit beside them rather than across from them on your next visit, and take the hand if that feels right to you both. Ask what the hardest job they ever had was. Gentle contact is in short supply for people who live alone.
