“Property of Dad” in marker on a drill case. Thirty years later it’s the most valuable thing about the drill.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Handwriting outlives function. The drill gets replaced and the marker on the case does not, because what the label does is prove that a particular person stood there with a pen and claimed a thing, and no new tool can offer that. Value quietly moves from the object to the trace of whoever owned it.

Write your name on the things you keep: the glove, the toolbox, the inside cover of a book. Add the date. It costs ten seconds and turns an ordinary object into something somebody can hold later and know exactly who was there.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Has anyone written their name on something you now use?
