Keep a card in your grandma’s handwriting. Years from now, it’ll feel like a hug in ink.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Handwriting is personal in a way typing is not. The slant, the pressure, the way somebody always crosses a t: that is a physical record of a hand moving, which is why a card in a familiar hand reads differently from the same words on a screen. It holds up for decades, and nothing has to be special about what it says.

Put one handwritten card somewhere that does not get cleaned out: a box, a book, the folder with your documents. If you have none, ask for a recipe written out by hand. That is an easy thing to ask for now and a hard thing to get later.
