When your older sibling moves out, the house gets quieter and you find out how much they were holding up.
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
You often learn what somebody did by living without them. An older sibling absorbs more than anybody notices: the buffer in arguments, the one who knows how your parents work, the noise that made the house feel full. When they leave, all of it becomes visible at once as an absence, and the quiet is not only sadness. Some of it is responsibility arriving.
If yours has gone or is about to, name what they were doing that nobody acknowledged, and tell them. Then work out which parts are now yours and which you can let go. A call on Sunday keeps more of it than you would expect.
What did an older sibling hold up that you only noticed later?
