Theater kids learn trust backstage: you hit your mark in the dark because someone’s counting on it.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Backstage is where the real training happens. Standing in the dark and arriving at an exact spot you cannot see, because somebody else’s cue depends on it, teaches a kind of reliability that has nothing to do with being watched. A whole show runs on dozens of those invisible promises. Nobody applauds the person who was in the right place, so the absence of disaster has to be the applause.

Find the unseen part of something you are in and do it precisely for a week: be early, put the gear back, hit your mark. Then notice who else is quietly doing theirs.
