A friend’s win doesn’t take anything from you. Good things for people you love aren’t a limited supply.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Envy runs on a false assumption: that there is one supply and somebody else took your share. Spots on a team and places at a school really are limited, and most of what happens to your friends is not. Their good week does not remove anything from you; it just arrives while you were hoping for your own. The sour feeling is normal and the arithmetic behind it is wrong.

When a friend tells you good news and you feel it drop, say the congratulations out loud anyway and make it specific. Then handle your own disappointment separately, later, and not at them.
