New friends are exciting. Old friends know which version of you to ask about.

Old friends carry the history that makes a question accurate. A new friendship is energising because you get to present a clean version of yourself, while somebody who has known you for years knows which thing you are actually worried about and asks about that, including what you have stopped mentioning. New friends get the summary. Old ones get the context.
Keep both, and stop treating the old ones as automatic. Send one of them a message about the specific thing only they would know to ask about. Then answer honestly when they come back at you, because that is what keeps the arrangement working.
Who knows enough of your history to ask the right question?
