Two people can remember the same fight completely differently, and neither one has to be lying.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Memory is not a recording. It keeps what hurt, what you were afraid of, and the lines you wish you had said better, and it quietly trims the rest. So two honest people walk out of the same ten minutes holding two different ten minutes. Deciding who has the accurate tape is usually the part that keeps the argument alive.

Try starting the repair somewhere other than the facts. Ask what the worst moment was for them, and say what yours was, without correcting theirs. You can agree on what you both want to do differently without ever agreeing on the transcript.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which argument do you and somebody recall entirely differently?
