Your parents were once somebody’s kid who didn’t know what they were doing either. Give them some grace.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Parents arrive at the job with no training and a child who did not come with instructions. Whatever they are getting wrong, they are improvising from whatever they saw in their own house, which may not have been much. That does not make every decision right or every rule fair. It does mean the person you are arguing with is also somebody’s kid, still carrying their own version of being fifteen.

Ask one of them what they were like at your age, and what they were afraid of. Listen to the answer rather than using it. Grace is not agreement; you can give it and still disagree about the curfew.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you forgive your parents for if they were your age?
