Saying “I’m just a perfectionist” sometimes means “I’m scared to finish and be judged.”

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Endless polishing can be a way of never arriving at the moment somebody tells you what they think. While a thing is unfinished it is still potentially excellent, and that possibility feels safer than a real opinion. The high standard is genuine, but it is also doing a second job, and the second job is protection.

Set a time, not a quality bar, on whatever you are stuck on. Hand it in or show it to someone then, flaws included. Notice what actually happens when the judgement arrives, because it is almost always smaller than the version in your head.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which unfinished thing are you protecting from being judged?
