Quality begins before inspection.

By the time something is inspected, its quality has already been determined. Checking can find defects, but it cannot put in the care that was not there during the making. Anything that depends entirely on being caught at the end will eventually ship the flaw that the check happened to miss.

Look at where your own standards actually live. If your care depends on knowing someone will review it, the standard belongs to the reviewer rather than to you. Try doing the next piece exactly as well as you would if no one were going to look, and notice where you would have cut.
