Every time you retell a story, your memory edits it a little. Write down the stuff that matters.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Memory is not a recording, it is a reconstruction, and each retelling leaves small improvements behind: a sharper line, a tidier order, a detail borrowed from somewhere else. None of that is dishonesty. It does mean the version you hold in ten years will be the story you told most often rather than the thing that happened.

Write the important ones down near the time, in rough notes with the plain details in them. Dates, names, what somebody actually said. A few lines in a notes app is enough, and you will be glad of it.
